OUR HISTORY

The Spanish Speaking Citizens' Foundation was established in 1965 by a group of visionaries dedicated to improving the lives of low-income Latinos in the Oakland area. Throughout the past thirty-seven years our mission has remained the same: to empower the community and the individual to improve their quality of life while upholding our rich Latin culture. Over the years, our agency has evolved into a family resource center that provides an enormous range of services. We are proud to find ourselves serving the children and grandchildren of many of our original clients, as well as large numbers of newcomers to this community.

In 1995, SSCF purchased its 5,000 square-foot building, located in the heart of Oakland's Fruitvale District. Governed by a committed Board of Directors, our friendly and welcoming center is truly a cornerstone of the Latino community of Oakland. Each year we assist 6,000 members of the community through providing vital social services and enhancing opportunities for leadership development and civic participation. Our range of bilingual programs include: Advocacy & Information, Citizenship Empowerment, Youth After School Programs, La Raza Youth Leadership Program, and Youth Employment Training Program.
